Ringer Spookfest
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under events | Leave a Comment
No idea what this is, other than what the spooky poster spookily says. Pumpkin stuff, costume stuff, scarecrow making stuff(!) this afternoon at Ringer Park. And MORE. Like more anti-social smashing mirrors stuff or happy caramel apples and other cavity forming stuff? Probably a little of both.

This is not Justin Timberlake.

While we’re on the topic of fake stars, none of these dudes is Justin Timberlake. The Social Network filming on the Charles (says photog Chris Devers) so he’s around somewhere though.

Green Day?
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under bars, music | Leave a Comment
Boston.com says Green Day is playing at O’Brien’s tonight, going so far as to give a nice little bio (Green Day formed in 1987, for the majority of its existence the band has consisted of Billie Joe Armstrong (vocals, guitar), Mike Dirnt (bass guitar, vocals), and Tré Cool (drums, percussion) Green Day was originally part of the punk rock scene at 924 Gilman Street in Berkeley, California.). It’s not exactly going to be those guys – they’re touring the arena circuit in England at the moment (here). Anyway, a little Halloween 90’s punk night sounds like more fun than going to some non-existent massive megashow so check out Fatal Flaw & co.

Ah, who am I kidding I dig centralized traffic controls. From the Tab.
In addition, six new traffic cameras have been installed at Allston-Brighton intersections, with the installation of a seventh underway. The cameras provide live feed of local traffic conditions to the TMC. As a result, traffic engineers observing up to the minute conditions from monitors in City Hall can make immediate remote adjustments to traffic signal timing at these 40 intersections to ease traffic congestion and improve traffic and pedestrian safety.

Zumbathon!

Tonight at CSC. Somehow it’s part of an effort to raise money for breast cancer research – if you don’t Zumba you can just dump extra piles of cash on the four starred DFCI.
[Er, nevermind. It was last night. I really need to get the internet at my house fixed.]

I’m sure there was a reason.

I just doubt it had anything to do with you, Alex.
Welcome to Allston…where your door gets tagged for absolutely no reason!
At least that looks scrub-able. They used acid on mine.

Ugg = Ugh
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under misc | Leave a Comment
I almost don’t want to link this as it refers to a best-left-nameless local baseball team whose recent on-field behavior requires a certain level of cognitive dissociation and avoidance to retain nominal happiness levels.
…and he goes “oh, so you can’t afford Uggs?” I just walked away because I didn’t want to get into a fight about how his hippie look is really unattractive and that my boots actually cost more than Uggs. He decided he didn’t like my unresponsiveness and chose to yell from his friend’s car as they drove away – “YOU’RE TOO POOR FOR UGGS!!!” Get a life, hippie drunk Allston douche.

North Harvard & Western

Gmook’s play by play of getting clipped in Lower Allston.
I was hit right in the basket on my rear rack, and I went down, hard. “Oof!” was the only thing I uttered as I hit the pavement. I was lucky I have a basket, otherwise that mirror would have struck my body, probably my backside or leg, and I probably would have tumbled over the bars. As it was, the bike was pushed forward by the momentum, and I went down on my side, scraping along the pavement for a few feet. I had board games in the basket, so along with body and bike strewn across the road, so were hundreds of “Apples to Apples” and “Pictionary” cards.
Be careful out there…

Licensing crackdown
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under crime | Leave a Comment
I love me some Big Buck Hunter*, almost as much as I love arbitrary law enforcement of licensing violations in the middle of what feels like (slipping into fearmongering hyperbole) a veritable stabbing spree. Thus some folks end up with adversarial feelings towards the BPD when a community partnership should be the end goal. But if things really are getting better and they feel like there’s no other crime most foul to address I guess this busywork is what comes next.
· At Bravo Pizza, 160 Brighton Ave., police found there a “Big Buck Hunter” arcade game to be in operation, but there was no entertainment license filed for the game.
· At Harpers Ferry, 155 Brighton Ave., police found that its entertainment, health, billiards and inspection certificates had all expired in September 2009.
· At Great Scott, 1222 Commonwealth Ave. in Allston, police found that the inspectional services certificate had expired in January 2009, and was issued a licensed premise violation.
My premise here conveniently ignores what sounds like some legitimately illegal fun going on at the 379 Club, ostensibly a barber shop.
The 379 Club barber shop, 379 Cambridge St. in Allston, was the business with the larger number of violations.
Police said they entered the building around 12:45 a.m. on Oct. 4 and found 60 to 80 people watching big-screen TVs, playing pool and playing cards at round tables. There was also a bar with bartenders serving drinks and a massage table upstairs.
*Big Buck Safari is clearly a superior playing experience. Anyone who would preferentially kill domestic animals over exotics is too boring to tolerate.
**Were I running Bravo I’d look into the “dollar bill loophole” as only coin operated video games are subject to helpful civic oversight.
