New Years Eve, 2009

First Night? Not a single event in Allston. But given their taste (“the hilarious Dane Cook”), screw em, drink local.

Harper’s Ferry – Back to the Future party (Billy Idol + Pat Benetar coverers).
Great Scott – Mean Creek & You Can Be a Wesley.
The Kells – DJ Grasshopper (presumably that’s crème de menthe & ice cream not the insect).
Deep Ellum – beers, I’m guessing.
Wonder Bar – Winter Wonderland w/ DJ Beyonder & co.
Model Cafe, The Draft, Our House, Common Ground & The Silhouette – all have issues w/ updating websites. So BLACK BOXES OF FUN.
The Joshua Tree – more of the same, but sold out.

Ok this turned out to not be such a useful post after all. Stay warm ya’ll.

So complete fail on trying to get free tickets for the public skate at Fenway yesterday morning. After waiting near the back of this ominously long line til 9:45 or so I heard someone say Jackson-Mann only had 250 tickets total to give out. At 4 per household, that’s just not a lot to go around. Everyone in the line here is just trying to get on the waiting list.

While that didn’t work out, I did hear about the league night hockey that was going on there, so went to check out how the winter classic rink looks (and to nominally cheer for a friend’s brother) while we waited for this blizzard to roll in. It’s pretty sweet setup, if cold & a little disorienting. Tickets for BU vs BC Jan. 8th (“Frozen Fenway”) are sold out but still available on stubhub.

Didn’t see anything about this Saturday night stabbing in the Globe or elsewhere. Fortunately Adam is (mysteriously) all-knowing.

Police charge Monivireak Meas, 24, went berserk with a knife, possibly after an argument with his girlfriend, and that he stabbed a complete stranger in the chest on Comm. Ave. near the intersection with Brighton Avenue around 2 a.m.

When officers initially found Meas, his girlfriend told them a mob of men had descended on him and beat him senseless. Both were taken to St. Elizabeth’s Hospital, where police found a man with a stab wound who told police that he and three friend had been walking down Comm. Ave. when an Asian man with “crazy looking hair” who looked like he’d just been in a fight started mixing it up with them.

I don’t know what this is but I like winter and I like pop.

The first-ever Winter’pop Festival hits Great Scott on Jan. 23, featuring Connecticut garage rock upstarts Twin Berlin, New York City electro-rock mavens BM LINX and a special guest headliner to be announced over the weekend.
