But barely. At Cambridge and Harvard

I was waiting at the light facing the entrance to Harvard Street. Just after the change, the instant the light turned red for Cambridge and an instant before it turned green for Harvard, I was about to kick off; my left side was facing the bus stop, so I couldn’t even SEE the bus as it jammed on it’s gas and roared through the intersection; THROUGH the red light. The only thing that saved me from being underneath it was probably the extra weight in my panniers and on my body (lunch, breakfast, and three extra layers because it’s 13f out there today!)

Head on over to Great Scott on Thursday, Feb. 4th to see Atlanta supergroup The Constellations hit the stage with Montreal’s We Are Wolves and our own hometown hedonistic heroes, Bodega Girls.  Tix are $8, available online and at Great Scott.  Or, you can try your luck at winning a pair of tickets thru Melophobe.com.  See you there!

Owning Bill is as of now a ska/punk trio out of Allston, MA. We recently lost our frontman who did vox and played the trumpet because he was too busy to commit to the group. We’ve played at Great Scott, Midway, All Asia, Church and have contacts in a lot of venues in the city and hope to start gigging again asap. We have 12+songs already written and are going to lay down about 10 of them for our album in February. We hope to recruit somebody who is cool with working with what we have and has a drive to be in an active gigging band.

Some bands we could be compared to: Leftover Crack, Choking Victim, No Cash, Propaghandi, The Code, Flaming Tsunamis

We have a manager, a van, and are looking to start playing in NYC this Spring to push our album.

You can check out a few of our tracks on myspace, but most are old and don’t reflect the current sound. Watch the video for “Pirate”, that’s more along the lines of our sound than any of the demo tracks right now.

Must be able to practice twice a week, and be a serious musician.

Get in touch if you wanna rock with us!

Howdy, Azama!

Posted by nathanael. Filed Under events, restaurants | Leave a Comment

This sounds good. And any late-night competitor to Redneck’s is a friend of mine.

Azama Grill will be opening on Harvard Avenue (between Cambridge Street and Brighton Avenue), bringing to the neighborhood a place to get halal food seven days a week–and late into the night, as their doors will remain open until 3:00 AM. In addition to kabobs, the menu at Azama Grill will include such dishes as tabouli, hoummous, falafel, baba ghanouj, shawarma, and Egyptian BBQ.

Relatedly, I was over at the MIT Hummus Experience earlier this week for a make your own hummus class. Fun stuff, they’re doing another next week, with a taste-off on the 28th (I believe – their website looks a little out of date).

Sake-free sushi, worth the mercury?

Posted by nathanael. Filed Under restaurants | 4 Comments

Utterly critical info from Sophie on Fish Market, currently #1 on my to try list. Critical for the borderline alcoholics amongst us, at any rate.

FYI to all the sushi fans out there – Fish Market does not have their liquor license yet, so no sake or Japanese beer :( They do, however, offer some delicious looking red bean ice cream, which I will definitely have to try next time.

Yelp feedback on the place is high (4 stars out of 50 reviews) and the decor looks stylish.

Look, I know it’s snowing. There’s slush out there, your socks are gonna get wet. But go vote anyway. The national commentariat seems to think this is a done deal upset for Scott Brown and given that fewer folks come out in the snow it’s extremely critical that folks get out to vote. Particularly if you care about health care reform.

The scene when I got to Jackson Mann this morning was dead. My poll-worker was head down semi-asleep when I got there. No signs for either candidate anywhere, no pastries or bad coffee. Boston.com is lagging severely under the load of people looking way too soon for early returns but has a poll-watchers feature where you can see what other folks are thinking. The Allston comments thus far indicate it’s been more or less slow all day (other than Kate’s take there at the top).

VOTED AT: Jackson Mann School
VOTED FOR: Martha Coakley (Dem)
HOW CROWDED: It was completely empty except for myself and two friends who I went with.
OTHER COMMENTS: I was sad to see so few voters and am glad I went to make a difference. I hope more democrats make it out today and don’t just think Coakley will win because MA always votes Democrat. The Dem votes are needed more than ever. Do it for Teddy!

Glendale Liquors?

Posted by nathanael. Filed Under retail | 1 Comment

Vino Locale (87•365)

At the Allston Civic Association is meeting this coming Wednesday, one of the agenda items is a possible liquor store going in a 193 Harvard Ave. Presumably this would be sharing the large space that Marty’s used to occupy, rather than as a replacement for the forthcoming Kelly’s. I’m guessing this Glendale Liquors is owned by the same people that took over Best Cellars in Coolidge Corner – it looks like their home store is out in Waltham. Generally speaking I’m happy to have retail in the empty spaces on the block, liquor store or otherwise. And anything to give Blanchard’s a little competition is a good thing.

Pink Legs

Posted by nathanael. Filed Under photos | 2 Comments

Boston Globe photo of the year #6 from Brighton Ave. Love this description from Dina Ruddick.

The picture is not the pink tights, and the picture is not the cat. It’s the compositional orientation of the cat with the legs and the bag and the shoes and the door. But they all have to line up so they all read as their own distinct things. To follow the pink legs or to follow the cat, that’s missing the point.

Thanks HM.

Smokers vs Bikers

How do you feel about Boycotting Shaws, based on their employment of grumpy old me?

I would have sided with Keven Spacey on this highly contentious issue, back before I sat through his Lex Luthor in the new Superman.
