Breaking Freedom

The Breakers have won 4 of their last 5 and have somehow moved themselves from near last into playoff contention (though that talk may be premature with six weeks of soccer to go). One of which is here at Harvard Stadium tonight (6pm) against Washington. If you haven’t already it might be time to think about gettin’ on the bandwagon.

BU has a quidditch team?

I can’t tell if this is a joke perpetrated on Bostonia Magazine, or by them. They almost had me until I got to the stock stuffing quote.
[T]he seeker must capture the snitch — a sock stuffed with tennis balls carried by a person (typically a cross-country runner) dressed in gold.

Ok fine, maybe it’s real. Here’s the IQA. And the recap of their 0-2 trip to the 2008 Quidditch World Cup.

Allston DIY Fest
Posted by nathanael on July 26th, 2010. Filed Under art | 1 Comment
I’ve been spending a lot of time in Somerville as of late trying to build incremental support for Foss Fest so have been a little out of things. So while I like to pretend I know what’s going on in Allston, I completely missed that the Allston DIY Fest in Ringer Park was even going on last Saturday. Fortunately Jillian was there.
Update: And since Universal Hub was nice enough to give us a link, here’s a full set of the happenings from selkie30 (some of which are also in the allston city limits flickr pool).

Hey check this, it’s an all-allston, pre-rain dailyBOS! This makes me happy, almost as though I hadn’t been hand-cuffed to a hermetically sealed corporate work-o-square all day.

Bostonist tries to rectify this situation.
(personally, I think these railing pea pods are pretty awesome. but yet, unlisted.)
((bostonist commenters, when they show up, are pretty much jerks. sfist is better.))

Foss Fest update

A quick Foss Fest reminder – the lineup for bands is set for next Sunday, July 25th, and Allston’s own Kieran Ridge Band is closing the show from 3-4pm. Please come by and say hi, Foss Park in Somerville. Assuming we’re not all tubing down a flash-flooded Broadway to Sullivan Square. Actually that’d be fun too.
BTW, it’s last minute but we have space for a few more vendors. If you’re interested in selling your art or doing something interactive with kids, please drop a line to fossfestvendors at gmail.com. Tables are cheap.

ParkArts, Allston

There’s something vaguely disturbing about marionettes. At least, it’s seemed that way ever since the lustful nun/priest scene near the beginning of Being John Malkovich.
Rosalita’s Puppets at ParkArts will (probably?) be somewhat less sacrilegious.
This event is a series, on the next four Thursdays (July 22 &2 9 and August 5 & 12), at Ringer Park (also, in Brighton for the next four Wednesdays). Rosalita’s undead creatures will only be performing on August 12th.

Bogus & the Breakers

An improbable but exciting two game winning streak has lifted the Breakers to a 3-5-4 record. They’ll be looking for another three points at 6pm tonight at Harvard Stadium against the Washington Freedom. Tickets ($15+) are still available.

An open letter

Dear whoever-the-fuck is tagging the neighborhood with this horribly uncreative stencil. Please stop doing this. Your shit is everywhere, on sidewalks, business, and now I’m seeing this creep into residential areas on retaining walls. The wannabe “viral” and promotional nature of your stencil irritates and grates, and isn’t going to end up achieving whatever it is you’re trying to do (at the least, you’ll get no links from me). And now you’re defacing real street art. Please just go do something else with your time. Slap some stickers on a stop sign, huff some paint or write another rambling 10,000 word treatise on Wittgenstein. I really don’t care. Just, enough with the stencil already.
