Allston DIY Fest

Posted by nathanael on July 26th, 2010. Filed Under art | 1 Comment

I’ve been spending a lot of time in Somerville as of late trying to build incremental support for Foss Fest so have been a little out of things. So while I like to pretend I know what’s going on in Allston, I completely missed that the Allston DIY Fest in Ringer Park was even going on last Saturday. Fortunately Jillian was there.

Update:
And since Universal Hub was nice enough to give us a link, here’s a full set of the happenings from selkie30 (some of which are also in the allston city limits flickr pool).

ParkArts, Allston

There’s something vaguely disturbing about marionettes. At least, it’s seemed that way ever since the lustful nun/priest scene near the beginning of Being John Malkovich.

Rosalita’s Puppets at ParkArts will (probably?) be somewhat less sacrilegious.

This event is a series, on the next four Thursdays (July 22 &2 9 and August 5 & 12), at Ringer Park (also, in Brighton for the next four Wednesdays). Rosalita’s undead creatures will only be performing on August 12th.

Meet the mayor

At Ringer Park tomorrow morning, a chance to talk with the Mayor about open space and score some free coffee. And get a free flowering plant from… wait the city has greenhouses? Yes, the Parks and Recreation Department does, at the Maintenance Yard in Franklin Park. I guess that makes sense given the tulip explosions going on over at the Public Garden.

Spring cleanup

At Ringer Park this Saturday. Breakfast and Lunch and Work Gloves provided! There’s also a similar concurrent event at the Honan-Allston Library, but they only can offer coffee and donuts, er “doughnuts”. Wait, is that actually a preferred spelling? Eh, a toss up.

Glass & fire

Posted by nathanael on March 28th, 2010. Filed Under quality of life | Leave a Comment

Some jackass broke some beer bottles inside my entryway this weekend. And it sounds like something similar is going on over at Ringer.

Pieces of glass and a fire pit with rags and fire accelerant were found in Ringer Park on March 20 near the Allston Street entrance pathway. Flammable liquid was also found poured on the Webly Street sidewalk.

Joan Pasquale, executive director of the Ringer Park Partnership Group and the Parents and Community Build Group, discovered the vandalism when a group met for a cleanup of the Allston-Brighton business district.

“That’s very concerning. You have a row of cars, you have a school, you have a park. There was obviously a fire,” she said.

Pasquale said she also found wooden fencing from a nearby property thrown in the fire pit when she walked through the park past the softball field near the Rugley Street entrance. Pasquale was able to help clean up the broken glass, and tried to warn people who were walking their dogs, wearing sandals or riding their bikes.

Look, knock yourself out, get drunk, rack up your noise violations, but don’t burn down the park, and smash shit in your own house. My dog is literally too dumb not to step right on your broken bottle.

This trashy rainy photo from @justfeelingtired reminds me to post this about the next Ringer Park cleanup, a month from today.

The Parents & Community Build Group Inc., and The Ringer Park Partnership Group are seeking volunteers for its annual Fun Spring Clean Up of the 12.38 acres of Ringer Park from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. on Saturday, April 24, in Allston, a Boston Shines Collaborative Project.

The event features breakfast, lunch and refreshments, and work gloves and tools are provided by PCBG Inc. Volunteers can work any time that they choose.

For more information, e-mail Joan Pasquale, executive director PGBG INC., at pcbginc@verizon.net.

Burden swap

If you find yourself needing help, consider asking the wise jellyfish who lives in this blue box amidst the woods of Ringer Park. If you can locate it, that is – only the honestly deserving will find their path converge with this elusive aquatic alter.

Fightclub After-school Special

From the Tab.

Police were called to Ringer Park in Allston on Feb. 5 at approximately 3:29 p.m. to investigate a report of a fight between two young women that about 15-20 males were videotaping.

Officers canvassed the park area and found a small group of females leaving, walking toward Gordon Street. One girl was suffering from several scratches on her face that were bleeding. The 16-year-old girl said she had been in a fight with unknown suspects, and that the boys were taping it for broadcast on YouTube.

I couldn’t find it on the youtubes. But it probably went something like this.

Ringer Spookfest

Spooky poster

No idea what this is, other than what the spooky poster spookily says. Pumpkin stuff, costume stuff, scarecrow making stuff(!) this afternoon at Ringer Park. And MORE. Like more anti-social smashing mirrors stuff or happy caramel apples and other cavity forming stuff? Probably a little of both.
