daily BOS provides (microscopic) evidence that a number of people queued in the rain for the Real World auditions at Sunset last Saturday. The Globe mentioned a couple of the line standers under a terrifyingly grizzly Jonah Hill photo.

In Allston, 18 to 24-year-olds gathered at Sunset Grill and Tap on Saturday for a casting call for MTV’s next season of “The Real World.’’ Reality-show hopefuls included 22-year-old Alex Brielmann of Windsor Locks, Conn., 22-year-old Brianna Belanger of Allston, 24-year-old Christopher Martin of Everett, and 23-year-old Jaime Mahoney of Waltham.

Will any of these hopefuls make it on the show? That’s a mystery that may never be solved as it’s not 1996 so nobody will remember to watch and see.

Congratulations to Deep Ellum for getting the reader’s pick for Best Bar from The Phoenix! It is well deserved.

Other Allston winners include: Brown Sugar won Best Thai, Common Ground won Best Trivia Night, Le’s for Best Vietnamese, Sunset for Best Bar for Beer Selection, the 379 Club for Best Men’s Haircut, The Pill at Great Scott for Best Dance Night and Urban Outfitters for Best Women’s Clothes.

Moving on to the making-stuff-up section: Myung Dong 1st Ave won Best Place to Detonate a Soju-Bomb. Paint Pens in Purses won for Best Artist, Graffiti/Performance/Street (specifically for what they did at Marty’s, but previously mentioned here re: LAB). Even the alley behind our new Kelly’s gets a curiously biographical nod of sorts. And lastly, Blanchard won Best Wine & Liquor Store (a year post-puppy stomp, the collective mind has forgiven).

Anyway, congratulations to all!

Linda Miskin’s excellent series continues, most recently interviewing Marc Kadish of Sunset Bar & Grill.

On picking his location-

A broker told me of a good deal in Allston where there was a bargain price and financing. So, I looked at the space and the neighborhood. I soon came up with a concept of how I could open a business and really make something of it. Without much thought or time, I blurted out a low offer and got it.

Getting started-

Eventually, the squash club nearby, which I was a member of, did over their bar, and I was able to get their old draft system. We kept struggling along, making most of our purchases on credit cards and carrying a lot of debt. We put every cent we made back into the business. We opened without all of the things we should have had.

On rare beer steins-

We got a lot of those when the Wursthause in Harvard Square went out of business. One stein we bought was about six feet tall. It had monkeys all over it. It cost thousands of dollars. Unfortunately, it was stolen. People who are into these types of collections really enjoy seeing them here. Sunset Cantina has an extensive array of our collections.

For event volunteer Diane Williams, a self-proclaimed “Internationalist,” her love of the ribs was surprising to her — she even turned down a picture with the mayor in order to ensure she got her second helping!

A note – the above photo is not meant to imply that the right-most person in it (jrob) would rather have a mayoral photo-op than eat ribs. I would not even begin to make predictions about the meat eating habits of anyone who is “the only one there bike as fuck”.

Nacho Patrol has been eating their way through Allston. Their gut, your gain. HEED THEIR WISDOM.

Sunset Bar & Grill: massive

We were in heaven…yet it quickly turned to hell. These nachos suffer from too much of a good thing– so many ingredients were piled on them that it was near impossible to get an even distribution. It took us a good ten minutes to crack through the cheese to get to the pork, and even then, only Guest Judge Doreen had easy access.

Common Ground: unflavored

After a few bites we flagged down our waitress and asked for a side of chili in hope of a hail mary. We poured it on top and hoped for the best, but unfortunately, all was lost, as even the chili was bland…

Our House West: best when intoxicated

Yet despite all the awkwardness and embarrassment, we continue to return, for the $3 Brubaker’s, consistently favorable male-to-female ratio, and the fact that it is within stumbling distance of Nacho Patrol World Headquarters.

That sounds about right.
