The sadly/mercifully dead Super 88 reopened some time ago as the Hong Kong Market. Which I’m using as a flimsy premise to post this awesome photo of tea eggs from Tiny Urban Kitchen. There was some freshness skepticism from TUK last month on Chowhound.

I stopped by the new Hong Kong Market in Allston about a week ago. It was fully stocked, and the brands are a bit different than what Super 88 used to carry. I was pretty happy with the level of items available. I bought some fresh soy milk and deep fried crullers (yo tiao). Unfortunately, in less than a week, the soy milk was solid and chunky, and the crullers (still in the bag) had molded. I was soooo disappointed. What’s going on? Then I looked on the package and realized they had sold me EXPIRED crullers. I’m so disappointed. I had such high hopes for Hong Kong Market. Why are they selling expired items? Just make sure to check your dates when you buy stuff there! Still haven’t had a chance to go to H Mart . . hoping for something better . . .

H Mart in Burlington is a little far outside our geographic scope but have heard nothing but ridiculously positive raves about it. Other than bitching about parking shortages (don’t park next door and walk over).

Super 88, sold

Super 88, Boston’s homegrown Asian supermarket chain, is being sold to a New York company, Hong Kong Supermarkets Inc., ending months of speculation about the future of the firm.

& sued.

A group of Hub produce wholesalers yesterday sued Super 88, the Asian supermarket chain that’s changing hands, saying they are owed more than $200,000 for past deliveries.

The first time I stepped foot into a Super 88, I was very overwhelmed, confused, and somewhat afraid. I didn’t know what the pointy purple fruit was and if I was supposed to fish for my own seafood in those huge tanks. But, I got used to it and now I can cruise the aisles with the best of them.
