The Kells is closing, re-opening as Tavern in the Square.
According to the Phantom Gourmet, The Kells, a nightspot on Brighton Avenue in the heart of Allston Village that has been featuring dancing, DJs and live music since the early 1990s, is being replaced by Tavern in the Square, a dining spot and bar with three locations in the Boston area that features mostly American fare and pub grub.

Literally bouncing?

It’s a figurative title guys. Yet another chapter in the neverending saga of Kells misbehavior.
A fight in The Kells Night Club, located at 161 Brighton Ave in North Brighton led to charges pressed against one of the bouncers.
George Hewett, 21, of Berkley, N.H. allegedly assaulted a female patron as he attempted to remove her from the bar at 1:30 a.m. on Jan. 24. The bouncer told police he was trying to break up a fight between three females when he was pushed to the ground on top of one of them.
Someone should ask Carolyn Conway if Hewett recently came from a hip-hop show at another venue.

This week in The Kells
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under bars, crime | Leave a Comment
It’s been a busy week and The Kells updates keep on coming. To recap, a 24-year old guy (who was working at BU) is fatally stabbed outside the bar (in the middle of a crowd) over a dispute with some friendly guys he was talking to inside. Fortunately the police are around & foil escape of the (alleged) knife snatcher, Corey Patterson. Boston Licensing Board Chairman Daniel Pokaski bizarrely intones The Kells is “not a trouble spot“. Adam explains how one might think that’s not the most accurate view of things. Pokaski subsequently admits he’s not really been paying attention. Behind Dark Eyes finds the five (!) flask memorial. Jerry Quinn says fuggedaboutit and invites everyone over for thanksgiving turkey. Beirut League still scheduled for Monday.

Update on the (most recent) Kells stabbing
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under crime | Leave a Comment
Adam has lots of details on yesterday’s stabbing incident. Particularly interesting, the foiled escape attempt.
Tresler said the car, with three other people inside, then took off – and promptly got stuck in a traffic jam, caused in part by responding police cruisers. Patterson, he said, was ordered out of the car and to surrender the knife. But even with officers holding their guns out, he refused, Tresler said. It took three police officers and “a violent struggle” to subdue the punching and kicking Patterson, Tressler said.
Also interesting, this anonymous take from a purported witness (and predictable “yet you did nothing OMG!!1Z” reply). The more information that comes out on this, the less random it seems.
(also, while it’s true that nobody likes the Brewers, the arrestee is an entirely different Corey Patterson).
UPDATE (on update): Victim’s name released.
Gregory A. Phillips was stabbed once in the heart while he and a group of friends argued – first verbally and then physically – with a second group of people after leaving The Kells, Suffolk Assistant District Attorney Paul Treseler said in court today.

Honan 5K
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under events | Leave a Comment
Coming September 20th at noon, it’s the 6th annual Brian J. Honan 5K. Details in the Tab.
The family-friendly run/walk Brian J. Honan 5K Road Race will welcome everyone from competitive runners to friends of the councilor onto a newly configured flat and fast USA Track and Field certified course for a sanctioned race that covers just over 3 miles of Allston-Brighton. The race will take place Sunday, Sept. 20.
Money raised through the race benefits the scholarship funds of the Allston Board of Trade and the Brighton Board of Trade. The race also benefits the Honan family’s charitable fund. The Brian J. Honan Charitable Fund was established to carry on Honan’s commitment to the causes that he championed throughout the course of his life.
With funds raised from the Brian J. Honan 5K the Charitable Fund has been able to aid and foster local and national programs that support education, recreation, housing and health care.
Participants will start from The Kells of Boston at 161 Brighton Ave. in Allston Village and complete the 3.1-mile course at the Kells. Water and timing stations dispersed along the course will provide runners with the edge needed to run a personal best.
5K is a perfect race distance – short enough that your most sedentary can finish and the more fit types can work themselves into an anaerobic mess. Anyway, they’re on both the open internets and Facebook. Registration is still open on Cool Running for $20. New Balance is a sponsor, they’re giving away 1000 t-shirts.

When you think of The Kells you might think party but typically not of the Democratic sort. Rock on tomorrow noonish with a post-MLK pre-work drink or four at The Kells inauguration bash. No cover…

Vagiant off Rock City Music & Style Show bill
Posted by nathanael. Filed Under photos | Leave a Comment
Helen McWilliams of Vagiant (via Jim Sullivan) relays a somewhat amusing story about the political machinations resulting in them being dropped from the Rock City Music & Style Show due to the song above -
My band just got kicked off a benefit show for the Allston Village Main Streets due to our refusal to drop a song called (here) “F the Kells” from our setlist. The AVMS wasasking us not to play the song due to the influence of the owner of the Kells…. a band FROM Allston is getting kicked off a BENEFIT show FOR Allston because one of their songs is ABOUT Allston.
